After more than 30 years of service at the Mountain Sanatorium as chaplain, Rev. Calvin McQuesten, familiarly known to thousands of patients and former patients as "The Old Padre," is being retired by the Hamilton Presbytery.

Commencing his service toward the end of the First World War, under the auspices of the old Department of Militia and Defence, Rev. Mr. McQuesten has been a familiar figure around the wards, where his ready wit and friendly smile have made his daily visits a welcome interlude to the sick.

On Thursday a delegation of patients waited on the retiring minister and following the reading of an address by Reiko Saito Mr. McQuesten was presented with a valuable "calendar" wrist watch by Rodney Mallard on behalf of all the patients, the event being broadcast over the San's public address system under the direction of Gladys Mitchell.

"The Old Padre" expressed his delight at the gift, remarking that only a few days before he had discarded an elderly wrist watch "which had driven two watchmakers to despair." In thanking the patients he told them "You are my family, my children -- the only children I shall ever have; as dear to me as any children could be."
