My dearest Calvin,

You had been writing so hopefully that I still retained a faint hope, that matters might be so arranged that you could remain at Bracebridge, so that I was somewhat disappointed, when Tom brought home his report of your decision. You did, I am sure, what you felt to be the best thing, but I feel very deeply for you. It is just another disappointment, and it must be very hard to keep up your courage. I cannot begin to say all I feel, it would only make us both feel badly, but it is hard to see, why things run so smoothly for some, who are utterly undeserving, whilst others, who deserve the best, suffer so much. But "what we know not here, we shall know hereafter"; and when we are God's children, we know that He is ordering our ways. I was so thankful to think, you had the McKerachers to go to. It distressed me to think of your having to go through the ordeal of that meeting and I do not know how you stood that long time of uncertainty. It seemed to me, one of the most trying experiences a man could have endured, but we do not doubt the strength was given you; and you need not fear, but the way will be opened up for you into some other field, suited to your strength, and where your talents can be used.

When you come down, we can talk over, what you would like best to do, and if you are short of money let me know and I will send you some. Bring down your clothing and you might not require to go back there again, for one of the girls could go up and superintend the packing. Now I must close to catch the post.
