Dear Editor:

This office is in receipt of a letter inquiring about the inscription which appears on the stone memorial tower in the center of the River Road adjacent to the entrance to the Oakes Gardens, The inscription reads as follows:

"And I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge and stand in the gap before me for the land that I should not destroy is but I found none"

The quotation is from the Bible, Ezekiel, Chapter 22, Verse 30.

There is also another inscription on the same tower which reads "The flood have [sic] lifted up O Lord. The floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves." This is from Psalm 93, Verse 3.

Can you enlighten us as to the significance of these inscription[s] so that we may inform our correspondent?1

Very truly yours.

1 W-MCP7-1.087 also requests clarification regarding scripture passages, which is given in W-MCP7-1.089.
