In the Matter of the Reverend Arundel Charles Hill Master of Arts

Upon hearing read the pleadings and proceedings in the above matter, the warrant issued on the thirteenth day of October last past, and the various reasons alledged by Council for the said The Rev. Arundel Charles Hill, I hereby consent that the said The Rev. Arundel Charles Hill should receive and have conferred upon him the degree and title of Bachelor in Smoking, having previously ascertained according to the rules and practice of this honourable court that there is no just cause or impediment which the said the Reverend Arundel Charles Hill should not be admitted to the fellowship and brotherhood of THE CLUB and to all the rights, priviledges, immunities, powers, profile and advantages thereunto belonging or in any wise [?]appertaining, Provided always and It is hereby specially required and set forth that the said Reverend Arundel Charles Hill shall upon such occasion as he may be in the City of Hamilton call at the usual place of business of us the Honourable, the Scavenger, and these according to the rules certain, use usage and most of our Honourable Court of Fumigation have filled, checked, pressed, pounded, packed [unmouthed?] [antirosalated?] [?] and fumifaciated a pipe at the hands of our worthy selfs [sic] and at our own proper costs, charges, expense and outlay.¹

¹ The playful tone of this document is common in Isaac's communications with friends prior to his marriage to Mary. They often wrote clever, if sometimes vulgar, letters. William Bickford, nicknamed, "Old Pill" seemed to be particularly close to Isaac and his letters exemplified this style of communication. See W-MCP5-6.256 and footnotes for examples of these letters.
