Dear Dr.

Mr. Stiles arrived at this place Saturday night and will now continue on our Patters. He wants the Lathe very much as well as the Bellows and the Cupola. You will likewise send the Planing Machine, the crank and the gudgeon on that Mr. Janes sent for. Stiles & I think we had better have 50 English brick.

Mr. Janes health is very poor in consequence of which he has not yet been down the lake. But now thinks of going tomorrow if he is as well as today.

None of the apparatus at the shop of B.W. [?] will answer our purpose except the Bellows and the crank.

Mr. Janes thinks he has sent you that Mr. Hardy's is not to be found, if not this will inform you Mr. Sutherland has just returned, and I have called on him accordingly he was very important. After blowing much wind, he offered to pay $147.53 which was all he would pay as he contended it was all you had a right to demand. Had I known at the time that the other signer lived on the other side of the Niagara, he would not have obtained his notes till he had paid the last farthing. I have handed the money to Mr. Janes and it waits your order. Mr. Stiles says that Mills may be had of Douglas at $25.00, if so why pay $35.00 or [??].

Mr. Janes is decided in the opinion we shall want 30 tons of Iron. I am equally decided in the opinion that we had better have a less quantity than to have more than we shall use- 20 tons will make as many castings as I can think we shall use.

¹ This is the name of the company on the envelope folder. It is the only instance that we have found in which the company carries the name: McQuesten, Janes & Co. There is some indication in the letter that Janes is holding the company money while he "awaits" Dr. McQuesten's instructions. Fisher and Janes did not get along well and Janes later absconded leaving debts to the company. See W-MCP5-6.240 and W-MCP4-6.237 for details of Janes' short-lived history with the company.
