W0349 DR CALVIN MCQUESTEN, SCHOOL ESSAY: APPLAUSE.
Jan 1 2000
To:
From:

It is a fact that we need no demonstration that [?] has so direct a tendency to [?] to the breast with zeal and exite to deeds of [?] and patriotism as [?] applause. And if this be the case of it be admitted that it is right in any case to give respect and homage to military champions surely no one held a higher claim on the people of these United States than La Fayette. I shall not attempt to presume that there was no immorality, no improper conduct seen in that class of people who are ever brooding over scenes of crime and disipation and ready to [?] forth on every publick [sic] festival. Nor do I consider that it has anything to do with the present question. The question is simply was the homage expedient; and by that I apprehend is meant the respect paid him, abstractly considered [?] I am willing to refer the decision of this subject to those who feel or sense of their obligation to the benefactors and are given their [?] that their conceit deserves.
