THE Committee of the Hamilton Ladies' Benevolent Society, present the Subscribers and the public in general, at the end of the second year of their operations, with a detailed account of their proceedings, in the hope that their efforts may be approved, and the liberality of the public again awarded to them.
The Committee gratefully acknowledge the kindness with which they have been met and their efforts seconded by many of their fellow citizens. The donations in money and clothing, in many instances, have been extremely liberal during the past winter; but while acknowledging the bounty received, the Committee deplore the want of a general interest in the objects of the Society, and the difficulty of raising funds sufficient for carrying out their plans of relief.
Instances of distress have come before the Committee truly appalling, such as sick persons with nothing but a roof to cover them, frozen to the floor upon which they lay; infants deprived by death of both parents at once; and mothers sick and desolate, deprived at once of husband and children by pestilence.
Throughout the year, there has been a great deal of sickness, frequently occasioned by intemperance, and in all the cases causing almost total destitution, but many deserving persons have suffered severely from consumptions, [agees?], fevers and other diseases.
Amongst the Emigrants especially, in the winter, sickness prevailed, and many still remain on the books with incurable ailments, and no earthly support but from you liberality.
The number of individuals visited and relieved throughout the year amount to 692 among whom 3952 loaves of bread have been distributed, and nearly 500 pieces of clothing, with about 100 loads of wood, and other necessaries to a large amount.
As last year, several persons have been forwarded to place where they had friends, or where they would more easily procure employment, and the Committee have the satisfaction of knowing that this plan has resulted in much good.
Several Children have this year come upon the Society's care who have lost their parents, making a considerable increase to the responsibilities; this charge the Committee hope to be relieved of, by the formation of an asylum for orphans, to which the City Council have agreed to contribute a share, and the public it is to be hoped will not be behind in liberally supporting this most useful institution in which the children who have been left by their parents in unspeakable wretchedness, caused by vice, disease and filth, may become useful members of society by instruction and care, which the Ladies will not fail to have provided for them.
The circumstances of the times last year, have put it out of the power of the Committee to redeem their pledge regarding a school, the wretchedness of the pauper emigrants requiring all their attention and all their funds, but the Committee look forward with hope, to uniting a well regulated school with the orphan asylum, an object on all hands known to be most desirable and likely to result in much good.
Upon the whole, the Committee feel satisfied that some good has resulted from their labours, and heir earnest desire is, that the same unanimity which has hithero distinguished the Society, may go forward with the new Committee, and at the same time that an encreased [sic] effort in raising, as well as in distributing the funds, may be displayed.
