My dear Mac,

Your favor of Aug 2^nd letter came to hand Thursday as my letters when here last Sept. were sent with Whit's care of Baring Bro's, & Co. I did not think but that you would know how to direct. I have no banker in London as I have my money sent by check and get it cashed wherever I happen to need it. Your letter gave all the information needed. I only wished to get an idea of the relative cost here and N.Y. I bought a set of instruments and glasses although I have since been almost sorry that I did for I may never use them enough to pay interest on the money and I am at present "hard up." I wish very much that I could remain here 2 months longer but it is impossible and I sail in the Abyssinia (the same boat we came over in) on the 27^th, one wk. from Tuesday for N.Y. If I have a prosperous voyage I shall arrive in N.Y. the 6^th or 7^th of Sept. and I would like very much to see your beaming countenance as soon after my arrival as possible. If there is any way in which you can know of the arrival of the ship please come to meet me with a little cash in your pocket. I must borrow what Whit can spare to get me as far as N.Y. and I must depend on you for $20 to get me to Maine--when I get there I can find some money. Whit will remain a month or two in London. He has lost some time and wishes to make it up. He is not up yet but would wish to be remembered if he knew I was writing.
