Dear Friend,

I received with much pleasure your kind note of the 28th with all it's good wishes on my recent appointment--It adds very much to the value of the promotion in my eyes to find it gives gratification to such old friends as yourself--though my modesty forbids me to accept literally the praises you bestow on me.

I have often intended to write to you to assure you how much my daughter and I were gratified with your kind attentions in New York last February, and we hope you will give us an opportunity of returning them sometime soon in Toronto.

Mrs. Ormiston I only saw once on her way to Whitby. She could not manage to get up the hill--Tom however did. I was grieved to see how much Clara suffers from her feet & not only so, but how much the poor girl felt the privation of active exercise. Is there not a probability--of her growing out of this weakness?

Isaac's child was baptized on Sunday, and I hear behaved herself with lady like propriety.¹ Your father I saw on his road to church and he seems as active & vigorous as usual.
