Washington August 11th 1880.

Sir:

In reply to your communication of the 5th Inst. referred by the President. I have to inform you that the Department regrets its inability to supply you with Vols. 1, 5 & 6 of Dr. Hayden's quarto reports, as none remain for distribution. Vol. 12. by Dr. Leidy, intended for distribution by this Department, is not yet published, the only edition issued for distribution is for the use of Congress. You are therefore respectfully referred to the Representative of your District for a copy.
For the Reports of Wheeler & King you are respectfully referred to the Hon. Secretary of War, under whose supervision they are published & distributed.
