Dear Sir,

Alice informs Mrs. Hart that it is your wish that Hattie¹ should live with us is this the case as if we would be very happy to have her do so but would not propose the arrangement till we had heard from you. Mrs. Hart has also heard that Alice informs you that Lottie who has been with us for now going on the last seven months is frequently away from school this is not the case for with the exception of some four or five days & two weeks she was ill at home Lottie has been to School regularly.

Mrs. Hart wishes to know if Alice has so informed you as we do not like such information being given you which really has no foundation or whether Mrs. Hart's informant has drawn on his own fertile brain I can only again say we should be glad to have Hattie live with us pay her well & use her better with best regards to you & Mrs. Baker I am Dear Sir awaiting reply

¹ Hattie and Lottie were two of Rev. Baker's grandchildren by his son James Alfred Baker. A few years after their father's death, they and their siblings were taken away from their stepmother, Maria Mudge, because of rumours that she kept male visitors for "undue lengths of time" (W3155).
