Baker,1 My dear Son, Being desirous of changing the domicile of Alfred's children and having to find out where under proper care I can place Maude and William, I have thought you, having at present no family with you, would gladly receive the children of your deceased brother [always?] to whom you manifested strong attachment, and endeavour to [do?] a father's part by them. I do not expect you to keep them at your own expense, but wish you to inform me at your earliest convenience if you are willing to receive them--the remuneration you will require for boarding & lodging Maude and William only--if willing to clothe them what you will need for that purpose. With kindest regards to your wife & family, I remain your afft. father T.B. [the?] [last?] [pt.?] P.S. Please communicate with me by letter, it is the cheapest, and in every way the most satisfactory method. You will not mention the contents of this to any person. I wish my arrangements made before any thing transpires. I have to provide for Harriett she is learning dressmaking in Paris where she must board.--William must be kept constantly at school, he is backward and dull--Maude has had sufficient schooling, her stepmother wrote me "She is stupid with study." 1 This is a draft of the letter to Thomas H. He also states that by his observation, the children are already in a good home with their step-mother. |
