W5846 TO REV. CALVIN MCQUESTEN from his sister, Edna. May 10 1907 Friday To: Rev. Calvin McQuesten Toronto, Ontario From: Oakville, Ontario Oakville, Friday May 10th1
My dear Cal,
Mama is in Brantford at the annual meeting of the W.F.M.S.,2 so we forwarded your letter. She enclosed it and sent it back for us to read with instructions that I write you.
It is snowing again to day but as yesterday was rather oppressive the cool weather is a relief. We have had carpets beaten and put down in Hilda's and my bed room, and Hilda and
Mary have washed and put up curtains. We got a splendid woman to clean and the place looks very different.
A week from to-morrow Olive and Loma are giving a Tea for us to meet the girls of the place. To-morrow Hilda is going to help dress dolls at the church.
We have a beautiful view and it is really a dear old place with good furniture and pretty carpets, curtains, and wall papers. In my room is a picture of a ship with R. Williams, Master
written below. There is a nice piece of ground at the side with fruit trees and grass and fir trees, also a
spruce hedge, a lattice fence separating this from back yard where is the ash heap etc. I have planted scarlet runners by the high fence and sheds. But I'm afraid the chickens from across the road have been investigating them.
Mrs. Page came to see us on Tuesday. She said she had gone to the same Bible class and young People's meeting as Mama in Toronto and lived across the street from her.
I'm sure you and Ruby will like this place.
In haste.
Edna
1 There is some confusion in the dates here. The Calendar states that Edna's letter to Calvin dated May 6th (W5840) was addressed to Glenhurst Saskatchewan, and the Calendar also states that this letter dated the 10th was addressed to Toronto. Then Mary's letter to Calvin dated May 16th (W5850) was sent to Toronto and it states that he is coming home "next week," and that he should not leave before the 27th. In any case the discrepancy involves just a few weeks in May, 1907 and Calvin is likely in Saskatchewan on or about May 30th (W5854) since Mary writes to him in Saskatchewan on that day.
2 This confirms that Mary spent a great deal of time travelling to WHMS meetings. She likely gave a speech there. See her Missionary Society speeches, W7193. |
