Dear Cal,

Just a few lines to enclose letters. Ruby's letter quite cheered me up, as I had sometimes thought she was not in a hurry to come home. Edna I think told her so, so I fancy this is why she has told her complaints. It always makes me very cross when I think of the doctor's making her stay there all winter, when I am sure her nerves would have been much better in a milder climate. Another shooting here last night by a burglar with a narrow escape of police and another man. It is really terrible to think of these armed ruffians going about, I pity the policemen, the chief should be dismissed at once. The lives of the citizens demand it. Sir Thos. Taylor is alright. Laura H. [Hostetter] has been suffering with her teeth (beside a bad cold ) and is having to have some out. It is too bad on her first coming home. You have not sent me any "memento," but will hear from you to-morrow. I fancy poor Tom hardly knows what to do up there.

It is just disgraceful the way those poor Kinrades have been hunted by reporters & talked over. I am glad our Times came out with an editorial on the matter. People now-a-days seem to be suspicious of everyone and so little sympathy. Hope to see you next week. With much love.
