W7659 TO [REV.] CALVIN MCQUESTEN from Donald McGillivray Sep 13 1907 To: Calvin McQuesten Knox College, Toronto, Ontario From: 44 Boone Road Shanghai, ChinaDear Mr. McQuesten,
I have yours of August 1st, from Glenhurst, Sask., and I remember you very well indeed, though it is so many years ago. Judging from your age on your statements regarding yourself, I should not advise China. In India, English alone would do for College work, but scarcely so in China. Yet, even in China, the College work is developing on modern lines and it is quite possible some of the missionary boards might need a man of your qualifications, but that you can only know when you finish your theology, by which time your way may be clearer.
About a theme for your thesis, I would suggest "The Characteristics of Eastern Civilizations." I have been wondering if your mother is still with you. If so, please give her my best regards. I am greatly interested to hear you are looking towards the [?] East. Just now Japan at Vancouver is clashing badly with the West, news of this just to hand.
Yours very cordially,
Donald McGillivray
