I was quite relieved when your letter to Edna came this morning; we had not heard from you for ten days, and I got into my head perhaps you had got cold or got used up with rushing to Port Elgin and your work in the office too. We have been standing the cold very well, till to-day but this seems almost too much and I do trust it will moderate. Edna got desperate and went off to see Mattie and they kept her for tea. Kate Mackenzie was here, but called back to Toronto, as Mrs. Graham [Bell?] was to go to the hospital for an operation, but she did not anticipate any thing being serious, but news has come that the doctors could do nothing, and did not think she would live more than a month. It seems so terrible for them all. Yesterday I went to hear Dr.[Louis?] Meyer the noted Jew; Mr. Singer and Mr.[ hold?] were with him; he is a very forcible speaker.

The trains have been most irregular. Tom planned to go down on Wednesday by three o'clock train, and have time to see you and others, but it did not start till 4:20, then they ran down an old man and had to stop, and so only reached Toronto at half past six, on time to get his dinner and go to the Mendelsohn. We hear that Dr. Hanson is not pleased with conditions at Erskine Church, considers things have been misrepresented to him; it seems people do not go to church in Montreal in the evenings; he was staying at Mr.[Rogers?] and Mr. Leitch met him, and asked for [?] our Anniversary, but he is going back early in the spring and do not understand if he is returning. It is said too that Mr. Johnson is "eating his heart out," because of conditions. I see that Mr. Cameron late of Brockville is called to Lethbridge; hope he will be strong enough. And poor little Davie [Ritchie?] is settled at [Duart?], it is a good thing. Well it is bed-time and I must write Hilda a line. You should have seen my lovely basket of flowers. [P.S.] They are getting up a new library for our Sunday School. I see the F.M.C. has missionary libraries. You might take a look at them and see what you think best to the amount of $5.00. Then I want you to suggest to your chief that he order right away for the "Girls S.S. Library" "Letters and Sketches from the New Hebrides" by the late Mrs. J. G. Paton. Edited by the late Rev. Jas. Paton [?]. With portrait and illustrations cloth 6/[?]. This seems right but perhaps you could get it at cheaper rate [for?] your work Hodder & Stoughton [?]. By the same firm there is "The Story of John G. Paton told for Young Folks" by the same author with map & illustrations for 1/6 & 2/6 [cloth?]. There is the story too of [Lomai?] of [?] by Rev. Frank Paton for 2/6. Mrs. Paton's letters are most amusing and entertaining (far more so than her husband's). I read them to our Mission Band and they were greatly enjoyed. They seem to have been forgotten, but we used them lately in our Auxiliary & Mrs. Joe Thomson thought them most fascinating. Mrs. Paton saw the humourous side and was very bright. Before I give an order, must find out what books Mr. Graham is choosing, he is going to give 10 missionary books.
