My Dear Calvin,

Your letter came just to-night and wonder of wonders, I hope to send a page in acknowledgement by next mail. Knew you had gone from Bracebridge, am exceedingly sorry to hear the circumstances. Thank Heaven, we neither stand nor fall by the judgement of men. We have many most excellent men among our Elders but in my humble opinion some of them will have a mighty tight squeeze, if they get to Heaven at all. Delighted to know that you have the grace, grip and opportunity to take up work again. Blessing and success in Buckingham.

The incident by which we became acquainted in Wpg. [Winnipeg] and to which you so graciously refer, I had completely forgotten.

Am not sorry Cal that my lot fell in this country, sometimes we get tired and so sick of the job, but when rested begin afresh. There always appears to be some open doors and considerable sunshine mixed with the clouds.

We have two little folks in our home to keep us company, Hugh and Helen who is just now vigorously doing lung exercises.

I never reached the goal of my ambition: Convener of Presby. of H.M Board [Home Mission] and from a wiser view hope I never shall. The nearest to that honourable office in my experience is looking after the HM outfits. We employ about 15 Horses in the summer, most of which go to pasture while their [?] are following more intellectual?? pursuits in the winter.¹ I have served for two years as Convener of the Foreign Mission Committee.

Last spring was appointed FM Convener for the Synod and at the assembly on assembly's F.M Board. The last appointment I appreciate very much indeed.

While we were last at the Assembly received a call from Leduc but the folks here seemed to think they would like us to stay for a time. Therefore we declined the call and are here in the Back Wood still.

Mrs. Matheson joins in thanking you for your lovely gift of poems rec'd last year and especially for your letter now. Also in wishing you a happy and successful New Year. [?] [Baxter Matheson?]²
